How to Automatically Transfer Phone Photos to Your PC (Without Cables)
Before PhotoMove can organize your memories by their EXIF data, you need to get them off your phone and onto your Windows hard drive.
The easiest and most reliable way to get photos from your smartphone onto your Windows computer is by using cloud syncing over Wi-Fi. This bypasses the need for USB cables and completely avoids those frustrating Apple security popups or Android transfer errors.
Depending on what kind of phone you have, follow the simple steps below:
Option 1: For iPhones & Most Androids (via Microsoft OneDrive)
Use this method if you have an iPhone or any Android that is NOT a Samsung. Microsoft OneDrive is highly recommended because it is already built into Windows 10 and 11.
- Download the App: Install the free Microsoft OneDrive app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
- Sign In: Open the app and sign in using the same Microsoft account you use on your Windows computer.
- Turn on Camera Upload: Tap your profile icon (or the “Photos” tab), go to Settings, tap Camera Upload, and turn the switch On.
- The iPhone HEIC Trick (Crucial for Apple Users): By default, iPhones shoot in .HEIC format, which Windows sometimes struggles to read. In the OneDrive app, go to Settings > Camera Upload > Save HEIC photos as and select JPG. OneDrive will automatically convert them during transfer so PhotoMove can read the EXIF dates perfectly!
- Wait for the Sync: Your phone will now begin quietly sending your photos to your PC. They will automatically appear in this folder:
C:\Users\YourName\OneDrive\Pictures\Camera Roll.
Option 2: For Samsung Galaxy Phones
Samsung phones have OneDrive built directly into their operating system, so you do not need to download a separate app.
- Open your Gallery: Open the native Gallery app on your Samsung phone.
- Open Settings: Tap the menu button (the three horizontal lines) at the bottom and select Settings.
- Turn on Sync: Tap Sync with OneDrive (you may need to tap “Cloud Sync” depending on your exact Android version).
- Link Accounts: Follow the on-screen prompts to link your Samsung account to your Microsoft account. Your photos will now automatically sync directly to your computer’s
Pictures\Camera Rollfolder.
Option 3: Using Apple’s “iCloud for Windows”
If you already use iCloud to back up your iPhone, you can sync your photos directly to your PC without installing any new apps on your phone.
- Install the Software: Download iCloud for Windows from the Microsoft Store on your PC.
- Sign In: Open the program and log in with your Apple ID.
- Enable Photos: Check the box next to Photos in the iCloud settings to begin syncing your library. You can find them in File Explorer under
Pictures\iCloud Photos.
⚠️ Warning for iPhone Users (HEIC Files) As mentioned in Option 1, Windows sometimes struggles to read the hidden EXIF data on Apple’s default .HEIC files. If PhotoMove cannot read the dates on your iCloud photos, you may need to download the free HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store to allow Windows to read Apple’s format. (If you want to avoid this, use the OneDrive method in Option 1, which converts them to JPGs automatically!)
🔥 PhotoMove Pro Tip: “Always Keep on This Device”
When OneDrive or iCloud sends photos to your computer, it often creates a “cloud placeholder” to save hard drive space (usually indicated by a blue cloud icon next to the file). PhotoMove cannot process placeholder files!
Before running PhotoMove, make sure your photos are fully downloaded to your physical hard drive: 1. Open File Explorer and navigate to your synced photos folder. 2. Right-click the folder and select “Always keep on this device.”
Once the files have a solid green checkmark next to them, you are ready to run PhotoMove!
